Ländler

Il Ländler era diffuso nelle campagne austriache già verso la metà del '700. Nessuno si turbava vedendo contadini che ballavano volteggiando abbracciati stretti. Poi il Ländler arrivò a Vienna, dove venne adottato dalla borghesia, e fu scandalo. Le feste dei nobili, diversamente da quelle dei borghesi, non avevano fini di puro divertimento, ma ragioni molto più utilitarie: erano occasioni per imbastire trame politiche, combinare matrimoni, organizzare manovre finanziarie. Per questo si attenevano ad un rigido protocollo che consentiva danze tradizionali come il minuetto, la scozzese e la polacca.

Ben presto il Ländler si diffuse in tutta la città tanto che l'Arcivescovo dovette emanare una bolla per proibire, pena la scomunica, questa danza lasciva e demoniaca che rovinava la gioventù.

Tin Pan Alley

Alla fine dell’800 la popular music divenne un grande business e gli editori musicali americani si concentrano a New York in una zona vicino Broadway, dove erano situati molti teatri che allestivano musical. Quest’area è stata in seguito nominata “Tin Pan Alley”, cioè “viale delle padelle di latta”. Questa denominazione indica il caotico insieme di suoni che provenivano dai pianoforti (spesso scordati e di scarsa qualità) suonati dai cosiddetti song pluggers, musicisti utilizzati per far ascoltare ai clienti le canzoni scritte sugli sheets (fogli con musica stampata) di proprietà degli editori, o per convincere gli impresari delle compagnie teatrali all’acquisto. All’epoca i teatri erano il principale mezzo per far conoscere una canzone che, se aveva successo, veniva comprata dal grande pubblico. Uno dei più famosi song plugger fu George Gershwin, che iniziò la sua carriera suonando per la casa editrice Remick.Nel 1914 il successo economico dell’industria legata alla popular music fece nascere la ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), in difesa dei diritti di proprietà delle canzoni.Ancora oggi con il termine Tin Pan Alley si indica l'industria dell’editoria musicale americana e quel periodo della canzone popolare americana a cavallo tra il XIX e il XX secolo.
